Strengthening Our Schools

📢 Big changes are coming to Wauwatosa elementary schools! As part of our commitment to enhancing student learning and creating the best educational environment possible, the Wauwatosa School Board has approved the transition from a JK-5 to a JK-6 model. This strategic move ensures that sixth graders will remain in elementary schools, preparing them for a stronger transition to middle school while optimizing district resources.

The shift to a JK-6 model is based on extensive research and community feedback. Here’s why this move is the right decision for our students:

More Age-Appropriate Learning Environments – Sixth graders thrive in smaller, structured settings where they receive the individualized attention and support they need before transitioning to middle school.

Stronger Elementary Community – Students will spend one more year in a familiar environment, building deeper relationships with their peers and teachers, leading to a smoother transition when they enter 7th grade.

Smoother Middle School Experience – Moving to a 7-8 middle school model provides a clearer, more structured transition for students entering adolescence, ensuring they are socially and academically ready.

Better Space Utilization – This transition maximizes existing building capacity while maintaining smaller class sizes and equitable access to resources across the district.

📅 The transition will be fully implemented by the 2029-2030 school year, with incremental changes over the coming years.

🗳️ At the January 2025 board meeting, I supported this initiative as part of the district’s open enrollment planning and school boundary modificationsResolution RE_ Policy 5….

🏫 Future steps include:

  • Staffing adjustments to accommodate the new structure.
  • Curriculum alignment to ensure a seamless academic transition for 6th graders.
  • Facility readiness to support the shift.

Committed to Our Students’ Success

This transition is a proactive step in ensuring Wauwatosa’s schools remain high-quality, equitable, and student-focused. I’m proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact on student growth, well-being, and academic success.
